Finally finding some calm.
Our founder, William Shehan, served in the U.S. Army and was injured in the line of Duty. William's injuries included TBI, major physical and neurological damage as well as psychological damage.
After leaving the Army in 1991 William, like many other Veterans, had to learn to work with these issues. While the VA Hospital offers assistance in these issues he still found that they weren't enough.
Trying different modalities such as Chess where he learned to gain some control over the 64 squares and thereby his life, Meditation where he learned to control his breathing and stress, and Martial arts where he regained some control of his physical body he still felt something was missing.
Then a buddy invited him to go sailing and what happened was something special.
"As I took the tiller and guided the boat I felt at peace. On the water in connection with the sky and water with me as the interface I felt like I had some control of my life and a sense of calm that no other therapy had given me. To be away from the noise of the city, stress of it all and to be focused on the feel of the boat, what was needed to keep the sails full and us on course allowed me to let go of the pain and suffering I face daily, if even for a little bit.
Now when I am onshore and feel the situation becoming overwhelming I take a breath and think back to being on the water and in control. This allows me to face things that years ago would have stopped me in my tracks.
After 30+ years I am finally in a place I can help my brothers and sisters and started No Salt Sailing to accomplish this."
We invite you to come sailing with us and see if it can help you too.
