We offer basic sailing lessons, seamanship, boat maintenance and repair training


This is program is for Veterans and their families. Space is limited so we ask to keep it to a +1. 

There are no costs except a $5 minimum donation to hold your place as space is limited. (scholarships available, please contact for details)


Meeting Location: Harbor Office, 55 S Harbor Pl, Waukegan, IL 60085

Ground School: Via Zoom (link will be provided)

*Please note that parking becomes difficult as the day progresses. If you leave, finding parking may be difficult.


Please arrive 30 minutes before your session start time.

  • Registration and lite breakfast
  • Ground School will be completed via Zoom on the Tuesday before your session
  • Break
  • We Sail! You will be provided with a packed lunch.
  • Return to Dock
  • Lite BBQ and Debrief


We will cover the basics of sailing: 

  • parts of the vessel
  • rigging of sails 
  • points of sail
  • safety
  • navigation
  • weather
  • knots and more!

You can, but not necessary, get started at the following link US SAILING BASICS


Safety is priority number 1 and having fun priority number 2 (If someone gets hurt it’s no longer fun)

  • Dress according to the weather
  • Use closed toes shoes (no flip-flops!)
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Energy bar (or other snacks)
  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Medication (if needed) 
  • Please let us know in advance of any special concerns
  • Have a light meal before sailing (provided)

Our mission isn’t a one and done! Throughout the season we will have occasions to build camaraderie including the following:

  • Weekday short sails
  • Racing opportunities (Railmeets.com)
  • Cruising
  • Lake Crossings
  • Day Sails

Off season training includes the following:

  • Woodworking
  • Marlinspike / Seamanship
  • Boat maintenance
  • Electrical
  • Rigging•Engine
