We offer basic sailing lessons, seamanship, boat maintenance and repair training


This is program is for Veterans and their families. Space is limited so we ask to keep it to a +1. 

There are no costs except a $1 minimum donation to hold your place as space is limited. (scholarships available, please contact for details)


We will meet at the Boat Launch in Montrose Harbor Chicago IL. 

Ground School will be held inside Corinthian University Houseboat. CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS *Please note that parking becomes difficult as the day progresses. If you leave for some reason finding parking may be difficult.


0800: Registration and lite breakfast
0900: Ground School (Basic sailing 101)

11:00: Break
1130: We Sail! You will be provided with a packed lunch.
1500: Return to Dock

1600: Debrief and Dismisal

1700: BBQ on A-Dock (Optional)


We will cover the basics of sailing: 

  • parts of the vessel
  • rigging of sails 
  • points of sail
  • safety
  • navigation
  • weather
  • knots and more!

You can, but not necessary, get started at the following link US SAILING BASICS


Safety is priority number 1 and having fun priority number 2 (If someone gets hurt it’s no longer fun)

  • Dress according to the weather
  • Use closed toes shoes (no flip-flops!)
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Energy bar (or other snacks)
  • Water
  • Sunscreen
  • Medication (if needed) 
  • Please let us know in advance of any special concerns
  • Have a light meal before sailing (provided)

Breakfast will be:

  • Coffee
  • Fruit
  • Breakfast Pastry
  • Hardboiled eggs

Lunch will be:

  • Handcrafted sandwiches
  • Chips
  • Homemade Slaw
  • Fruit

* Please let us know in advance of any allergies. We are happy to accommodate!


Our mission isn’t a one and done! Throughout the season we will have occasions to build camaraderie including the following:

  • Weekday short sails
  • Racing opportunities (Railmeets.com)
  • Cruising
  • Lake Crossings
  • Day Sails

Off season training includes the following:

  • Woodworking
  • Marlinspike / Seamanship
  • Boat maintenance
  • Electrical
  • Rigging•Engine
